Go Against the Grain with these Extraordinary and Uncommon Wood Species!

Choosing a wood species is step number one in customizing your unique wood countertop. The most popular woods like Walnut and Maple are tried and true and will never cease to amazing friends and family. There are, however, a new breed of woods that few people have ever heard of much less have been used as a staple in their kitchen. If you really want to drop jaws, these are a few of the choices you have.

Shedua (2)Shedua

You may have never heard of this tropical west African wood. With a plethora of earthy colors joining distinctly beautiful striped grain configurations and shades of brown, gray and black stripes; it makes for a stunning option for your custom wood countertop! It is extremely dense and will hold up for a lifetime of enjoyment. If you want something different, this exotic wood is highly recommended!

Tigerwood

Goncalo Alves is an exotic wood species that is best known for its beautiful grain. I could go into detail with the colors and grain patterns but instead, I will keep it simple for you. It looks like a Tiger! You may imagine an exotic species with a majestic jungle cats coloring may break the bank. Tigerwood is competitively priced a little below the cost of American Black Walnut. I suggest Tigerwood for someone who wants something different in flat or edge grain.

 Jatoba

Brazilian Cherry isn’t quite as uncommon as some of the others, but it often used in different applications. With red and yellowish hues, it easily compliments a multitude of kitchen styles. Bold yet still subtle, Jatoba is an excellent choice in all 3 construction styles. It is extremely dense and will not get beat up easily. It is a beautiful option in all three construction styles.

IrokoP2010275

I hesitate to add Iroko to this list because it is by far the worst smelling saw dust in the world. Milling up Iroko wood is akin to using pepper spray for deodorant. That being said, it’s an absolutely beautiful and understated wood. It is commonly used as a substitute for the champagne of woods – Teak. It prices out to be a middle of the road option for wood species and will surely hold up for a lifetime on enjoyment. This is one of the best options available in end grain countertops. Iroko butcher blocks are sure to be a beautiful centerpiece in any kitchen.
