The first step in creating your custom hardwood counter top is to decide which wood species is perfect for you. National Butcher Block offers over 15 different species. Each wood species has unique characteristics ranging from the color to the hardness.

Grain Construction
Flat Grain construction, also referred to as plank construction, consists of 4″ to 10″ wide boards showing the face. A more traditional look often seen in furniture. Flat grain is not highly recommended to use as a cutting surface, as it will show knife marks and potentially dull the knife.
Edge Grain provides slightly more potential for variation in both size and in color. The board is cut or “ripped” to the thickness desired and turned on its edge. It offers a different look at a wood’s grain pattern, as well.
End Grain, or “Butcher Block” construction is put together with the end of the board facing up. This is the best option for a cutting surface. The blade of the knife will cut into the fibers of the wood, which preserves both the blade and the top.

Finish Options
Food Safe Mineral Oil– Our mineral oil finish is the best option for wood surfaces meant to be chopped on. It is a non toxic food safe oil that does require some upkeep. The oil brings out the naturals colors of the wood and offers limited stain and water protection. Upkeep is a fairly simple process that can be completed in 5 minutes.
Permanent Finish– Wood finishing is as much an art as furniture making. National Butcher Block uses a two component polyurethane finish that gives you a low maintenance, high durability option. Its resistant to 99% of household chemicals and completely waterproof. It is FDA approved for indirect food contact. This option will give you the durability you need, while still preserving the beauty of the wood and highlighting its unique grain patterns. Our permanent finish comes in a satin or a dull sheen.
